Abstract:  The California Department of Water Resources (CA-DWR), North Central Region Office (NCRO), Bathymetry Data Collection Section, conducted a bathymetric survey of Big Break and surrounding creeks and sloughs. The data are needed to help determine local hydraulics, future uses of Big Break, and to serve as a baseline for determining impacts of nearby wetland restoration projects. The survey took place between January and July 2017 using single beam echo sounder technology. The data were positionally corrected using Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS. The data were collected in NAD83 (California State Plane Zone III coordinate system) and NAVD88 datums. • Horizontal Units: US Foot• Vertical Units: US Foot

Purpose: This bathymetric survey was needed to help determine local hydraulics, future uses of Big Break, and to serve as a baseline for determining impacts of nearby wetland restoration projects. The associated data are considered DWR enterprise GIS data, which meet all appropriate requirements of the DWR Spatial Data Standards, specifically the DWR Spatial Data Standard version 3.1, dated September 11, 2019. DWR makes no warranties or guarantees — either expressed or implied — as to the completeness, accuracy, or correctness of the data. DWR neither accepts nor assumes liability arising from or for any incorrect, incomplete, or misleading subject data. Comments, problems, improvements, updates, or suggestions should be forwarded to GIS@water.ca.gov.

Description: Using the Single Beam Editor in the Hypack Hydrographic Survey software, the survey parameters applied to the data collected during the survey. Read parameters include information about: sound velocity, instrumentation coordination and settings, instrumentation offsets, and data sorting. Once the parameters were applied to the raw data, each survey line was examined individually for erroneous data or abnormalities. Survey lines were saved into an "Edited" folder in Hypack after erroneous data was deleted. All of the edited survey lines were then opened together in Single Beam Editor and the "Read Parameters" confirmed. The XYZ text file was imported into ESRI ArcMap as a point feature class and checked for positional consistency and accuracy.

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency:
Measure description: These data were collected using advanced Single Beam Sonar and Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS technologies. They are believed to be logically consistent. Visual reviews were conducted and data were reviewed in ArcGIS software packages.

Data quality report - Completeness omission:
Measure description: Elevations are generally believed to be characteristic of the channel-bed; however, in some heavily vegetated areas, these data may be more indicative of the elevation of the submerged vegetation, rather than the “bare earth” surface. In deeper areas with low visibility, this discrepancy may not be immediately apparent. “Noisy” patterns in the data are investigated during data processing using Hypack Software. These patterns may signify dense submerged vegetation and are typically filtered.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy:

Evaluation method: Ground truth measurements were taken each day of the survey to verify that the positioning and sonar instrumentation were functioning properly. Prior to the survey, CA-DWR NCRO staff set up a base station RTK GPS on a DWR monument, "BB1", located at 2192491.763 ft northing, 6207655.263 ft easting, and at an elevation of 12.930 ft.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy:
Measure description: Locational Quality: Determined to be no better than 1.5 feet horizontal. This statement has not been verified or approved by a licensed land surveyor.

Evaluation method: Positional accuracy Assessment Method 1 was used.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy:
Measure description: The Echotrac CV100 sounder has an accuracy of 200kHz-0.01 m +/- 0.1% depth. The RTK GPS System's Vertical Error is 20mm + 1 ppm RMS. Error introduced from the motion of the vessel was corrected using the Applanix POS MV Wavemaster System. The documented error for the POS MV System is: • Vertical Position +/- (15 mm + 1 ppm x baseline length) • Roll and Pitch 0.02° • Heave 5 cm or 5%
