Description: This dataset incorporates datasets containing minor canal features from public and private agencies, including the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, East Bay Municipal Utility District, National Hydrography Dataset, various water contractors, and other entities. The canals in the feature class may convey water for State Water Project or Central Valley Water Project contractors throughout California. Conflicts between these data sources and spatial inaccuracies were resolved using NAIP imagery from 2012. Any digitizing was done at approximately a 1:9000 scale. Many unnamed canals were identified using USGS topo maps and the ESRI Street Map layer. These layers were also used as the basis to modify or add canal features. The dataset represents an improved consolidated dataset for canal features over previous versions. This dataset attempted to pull various available datasets together into one location, clear up any overlaps and conflicting names, and improve the accuracy. But due to the fact that it is a "best available" type effort and full research on canals throughout the State was not warranted by the Program, additional major canal features may exist, errors in attribution may be present, and further improvements in spatial accuracy may be possible.
